Online Today

Our aim is to help people with sight loss to realise the benefits of getting online.  Here in Scotland we are demonstrating the accessibility features that come built in to most smartphone and tablet devices as a simple and cost-effective way to access the internet.  We want to make sure that as many people as possible have a proper grasp of the accessibility options that are out there.  For example you don't necessarily need a special phone if you have sight loss.  You just need someone to show you how to use a mainstream one, which may well be cheaper or  the same price but with more features.  We want to overcome people's fear of the unknown and give them a reason to try the technology.  For some people it's about staying in touch, for others it's about reading or another hobby that they can follow online

Our project is aimed at people with any level of sight-loss, whether registered or not, and we are also happy to share our knowledge with friends, relatives, carers, professionals and volunteers who might find it useful.  We are fully funded by the Big Lottery and therefore there is no cost to access our training.

The team will be visiting Orkney on 4th - 6th April and there are several ways that you can access our training.  Firstly we'll be providing a demonstration at the OneDigital meetup event in Kirkwall Town Hall at around 1.00pm on Tuesday 4th.  The following day we will be offering a drop-in event where people with sight loss, their friends and family are invited along to Kirkwall Town hall to try out the various accessibility options.  If you have a tablet or smartphone and would like to learn more about what it can do, please do bring that along.  After lunchtime on 5th Ian will run a small group workshop for those who would like a structured training session.  Places on that workshop will be limited so booking is essential.

At other times over the course of the two days Ian will be available for 1-1 consultations or meetings.  If you'd like to meet up with Ian for a short training session or to find out more about the project then give us a call.
