RSPB Orkney are looking for work party volunteers to join them on their reserves here in Orkney. RSPB nature reserves are special places for people and wildlife and they rely on volunteers to help keep these habitats thriving and in good shape. It might seem like these wild places have always just been there, but quite often RSPB Orkney have to work really hard to maintain habitats to be in the best condition for wildlife. Orkney has lost a lot of wild landscapes, so the small places that we do have need a bit of extra care.

Key activities include:
• Cutting and clearing vegetation;
• Maintaining and managing tools and equipment;
• Creating and maintaining visitor infrastructure, such as paths and benches;
• Following annual work plans;
• Following Health and Safety protocols.

What could a volunteer gain from the experience?
• Learn new skills and gain knowledge about wildlife conservation work;
• Keep your level of fitness up through outside work;
• The satisfaction of knowing you’re making a genuine contribution to nature conservation.

Experience required

No experience required for this role, as long as volunteers are willing to learn and are fit enough to be able to do a day of walking around/practical work .

Training details

Help with their practical skills e.g. using different hand tools and other general conservation knowledge such as species identification.

Restrictions

As this role requires physical work, it wouldn’t be suitable for someone who isn’t able to do a few hours of walking and using hand tools.

Volunteers (aged 12-25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity. Find out more
