Restart Orkney receives a large amount of donated electrical items, which are required to be PAT tested and checked for safety before being sold on. Due to an increasing volume of donations we have a volunteering opportunity for someone to help PAT test these items.

Key activities would include:
• Visual inspection of electrical items
• Plug in items to check on working condition
• Simple remedial actions if required (ie. change plug or fuse)
• Ensure internal electrical safety with our PAT testing machine
• Documentation of test results
• Cleaning items and preparing for sale

What could a volunteer gain from the experience:
The opportunity to meet new people in a busy environment. Learn new skills and update existing skills. A rewarding way to get involved in a local charity with environmental aims to encourage and increase re-use and recycling, whilst also enabling people on low incomes to access quality, low cost electrical goods. Pass on your skills to other volunteers and supported employees.

Experience required

Previous experience working with electrical items would be an advantage. Ability to follow set procedures with a precise, methodical approach. Ability to work independently using own initiative. Strong problem solving skills. Basically a “knacky-handed” person!
