We are looking for volunteers who can help us to run nature-focused events for visitors and the public. Our events and activities are aimed at all age ranges from toddlers to retirees, new to nature and those who are already nature lovers.

This is the ideal volunteer role for a ‘people person’ with good communication skills who wants to connect people to Orkney’s nature. The events you’d be helping with might include tables at the shows, events during the nature and science festivals, work with community groups, fundraising events, and outdoor events like walks and beach cleans. You’d be working alongside a member of RSPB staff most of the time, but there are also opportunities to work more independently.

Key activities include:
• Setup and takedown of events;
• Being a friendly face for the public;
• Attending walks or craft events or talks or community group nature events or show stalls!

What could a volunteer gain from the experience:
A deeper understanding and connection with Orkney’s native wildlife, as well as a connection to an exciting community of volunteers.

Experience required

We’re looking sociable people who enjoy speaking to others, and who are enthusiastic about wildlife. Knowledge about Orkney’s nature is welcome but by no means necessary—we’re looking for your enthusiasm!

Training details

We can help you to understand more about Orkney’s nature and science communication.

Volunteers (aged 12-25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity. Find out more
