Very Brief Advice (VBA) on Smoking is a 1-hour training (followed by an optional 30-minutes Q&A) which will equip attendees with the skills and knowledge to offer conversations about stopping smoking and then signpost to the stop smoking support services available in Orkney.
Smoking is the largest cause of preventable ill-health and early death in Scotland. In 2021 smoking accounted for 20% of all deaths in those aged over 35 years in Scotland. Very Brief Advice (VBA) on Smoking is designed to be used in almost any conversation with a person who smokes and allows you to offer practical advice in as little as 30 seconds. After the training the learner will be able to:
- Ask about smoking status
- Advise on the best way of stopping smoking
- Provide options for stop smoking support and access to stop smoking medications
- Deal effectively with those who do not feel ready to stop smoking
This training is delivered by staff from Quit Your Orkney - NHS Orkney Stop Smoking Service. It includes information on the health risks of smoking and background information to answer questions smokers may ask. There is also information on the benefits of quitting and, most importantly, how to refer smkoers to local support services to help them stop.
