Cancer charity Clan Cancer Support is hosting a volunteering open day in Orkney next month (Saturday, March 1) to encourage individuals to use their free time to support local people impacted by cancer.
The charity is currently seeking volunteers to offer its vital listening and support service which enables people impacted by a diagnosis to speak to someone about their cancer journey.
No experience is required with all training provided by the charity. Clan recommends that volunteers commit to a minimum of 3.5 hours per week.
There are further opportunities for those looking to get involved in fundraising events, including the charity’s Midnight Walk which is planned for June this year.
The volunteers’ open day will take place next on Saturday, March 1, from 10am– 2pm at Clan’s Orkney wellbeing centre based at 30 Victoria Street, Kirkwall.
Attendees are welcome to drop in throughout the day with Clan team members on hand to advise anyone interested in applying.
Karen Farquhar, Clan’s area service coordinator, said:
You don’t need to be a cancer expert to be a volunteer with Clan. You do need to be a good listener and to give your time. In return you’ll get training and the opportunity to play an important role in your local cancer support charity.
The benefits of volunteering can be felt by the charity and the volunteer. Volunteering can provide work experience, new friendships and the opportunity to develop new skills which can enrich your working and personal life.
Clan provides emotional and physical support for people of all ages who are impacted by a cancer diagnosis with the charity providing 760 drop in sessions in Orkney over the last year and welcoming 111 new clients.
Karen added:
Volunteers play a crucial role in everything we do at Clan and we are indebted to them. Their dedication enables us to provide first class support services to local people impacted by a cancer diagnosis.
We’d urge anyone who is interested in getting involved to come along to our open day at our Orkney centre where they can find out more about the charity and the opportunities available.
